Alma Webou belonged to the Yulparija group whose traditional lands lie around the Percival Lakes in the Western Desert. The Yulparija were forced to relocate to Bidyadanga (formerly La Grange mission) on the western coast, where the desert meets the sea, in the 1960s due to a long period of drought that depleted their natural resources. Distanced from the homelands, the imperative to ‘care for country’, the traditional responsibility of all Aboriginal adults, proved to be the catalyst for Yulparija at Bidyadanga to paint their country. Pinkalarta is Webou’s birth place. She could fulfill her traditional obligations by painting it, resplendent in vegetation and freshwater, as she knew it.
