George Adams Gallery, Victorian Arts Centre, Melbourne, Dancelines: contemporary Indigenous art inspired by Bangarra Dance Theatre, February 4 -April 2, 2006

One of the preeminent contemporary artists working in Australia today, Judy Watson was commissioned in 2005 by the Bangarra Dance Company and The Arts Centre, Melbourne, to create a body of work in response to the dance company’s production Boomerang. Bangarra Dance Theatre is Australia’s leading Indigenous performing arts company. The inspiration and motivation for Watson’s work is her family history and that of her people, the Waanyi in the Gulf country of Queensland. Watson’s a preponderance of aboriginal blood, 2005, was acquired by Tate, London, through a joint acquisition program with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, in 2016.
