The clipper ship Harbinger weighed 1473 tons and was built in 1876 by Robert Steele & Co. of Greenock, Scotland for the Orient Line's Australia services. The Harbinger was said to be the last sailing ship built to carry passengers in the Australian trades and was designed to try to outpace the Torrens. She became popular in the Melbourne run before being sold in 1898.
