Patricia Treib’s (US, b. 1979) paintings are composed around sensuous details and shifts in perspective. Her works draw on far-ranging references—the outline of a sleeve in a Piero della Francesca fresco, the contours of a 35mm camera, a ribbon—while resolutely turning to abstraction.

Treib’s paintings begin as small oil on paper works, in which she registers still lifes observed in the studio. Standing over the canvas laid on the floor, she applies brushstrokes until forms emerge, creating imagery that coalesces into an abstract alphabet or lexicon. Shoulder II, through its title, image, and palette, conjures biomorphic and organic shapes that echo one another, suggesting a call and response between the work’s elements.

Treib received a 2020 Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship and has participated in residencies at the American Academy in Rome, Dora Maar House, and MacDowell. Her works are held in the collections of the Morgan Library, New York; Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville; RISD Museum, Providence; Aïshti Foundation, Beirut; and TBA21 Collection, Vienna.
