São Paolo–based Jac Leirner (Brazil, b. 1961) is one of Brazil’s most celebrated contemporary artists, known for her elegant accumulations of items that suggest the frenetic circulation of ideas, objects, currency, and people within the art world. To make her sculptures and installations, she collects ephemera that is worthless, or nearly so—devalued banknotes, used envelopes, empty cigarette packages, plastic shopping bags—much of it produced or used by museums and galleries or found in hardware stores. Leirner then meticulously sorts these castoffs by type, color, or shape, and refashions them, as seen in 18 Rulers, into refined, minimalist constructions.
Leirner has had solo exhibitions at the Swiss Institute, New York; Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh; Museo Tamayo, Mexico City; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; among many others. Her work is held in the collections of museums worldwide, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Walker Art Center.
