Julie Buffalohead’s (Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma, b. 1974) richly colorful paintings use animal figures to convey narratives of Native history and culture. She draws upon her own experiences as well as traditional stories to create critiques—both humorous and biting—related to social issues ranging from racial injustice to gun violence. This work features floral motifs from Ponca ribbon work, a common thread throughout many of her paintings.

Buffalohead is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Grant, Guggenheim Fellowship, Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, and the McKnight Foundation Fellowship for Visual Arts. Her work is held in the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Art; Walker Art Center; Denver Art Museum; Field Museum, Chicago; Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City; and Detroit Institute of Arts; among others.
