Critically acclaimed Minneapolis-based photographer Alec Soth (US, b. 1969) creates compelling images that document his wanderings on the American road and beyond. Working within genres that include portraiture, landscape, still life, and documentary photography, Soth seeks his subjects with an eye toward finding beauty in the unexpected. He is also known for his publishing work and distinctive photo books. 2006_08zL0036 relates to the artist’s striking body of work entitled Broken Manual, which investigates off-the-grid places of retreat in America and the people who seek refuge there.
Soth’s work is held in numerous institutional collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; High Museum of Art, Atlanta; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. In 2010 the Walker organized the traveling exhibition From Here to There: Alec Soth’s America, the artist’s first US survey.
