Two works
Lot comprises: Thulia: A Tale of the Antarctic. New York: Samuel Colman, 1843. 8vo. Woodcuts, music. Publisher’s pictorial cloth — A second copy, with uncolored woodcuts. Rebacked — Antarctic Mariner's Song. New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1868. 8vo. Woodcuts. Publisher’s pictorial cloth; intermittent soiling and dampstaining, particularly to lower margin.
Two scarce poems about Antarctica.
Following the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-42, Palmer wrote the earliest published Antarctic poem. "This charming work, deriving from the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-42, contains the earliest published Antarctic poetry" (Rosove). The appendix is a prose description, Antarctic adventures of the United States' schooner Flying-Fish, from 1839. It is especially rare in its original cloth binding.
Twenty-five years afterwards, Palmer wrote a second version. Antarctic Mariner's Song is even scarcer than Thulia, also with an attractive cloth binding and engraved illustrations.
