A suji-bachi [helmet with raised ridges]

Signed Saotome Iechika

Edo period, 17th century


the richly patinated sixty-two plate iron bowl with raised ridges, terminating in a three-stage copper-gilt and copper tehen kanamono, stenciled Dutch leather peak, copper fukurin [ornamental border], the large turnbacks inset with stenciled Dutch leather and applied with sakura mon [cherry blossom crests], four-tiered black lacquer neck guard with close-spaced lacing in blue braid, the black and gold lacquer maedate in the form of a horin [Dharma Wheel; Sanskrit: dharmachakra], linen and leather interior lining


The bowl to peak: 31 cm., 12⅛ in.


Accompanied by a certificate of registration Tokubetsu Kicho Shiryo [Especially Important Object], no. 2140 issued by the Nihon Katchu Bugu Kenkyu Hozon-kai [The Association for the Research and Preservation of Japanese Helmets and Armour], dated Reiwa 5 (2023).
