Throughout its history, IWC has released 37 versions of the Big Pilot's watch featuring a perpetual calendar complication, making it a hallmark of the brand. The perpetual calendar is not only an IWC staple but also one of its most technically advanced complications. The company’s first perpetual calendar movement was developed in the 1980s by Kurt Klaus, designed to account for variations in month lengths and leap years. When set correctly and regularly wound, the watch wouldn't need adjustment until the year 2100.

In 2021, IWC introduced the Big Pilot's Watch Reference IW5036-05, an ideal platform for showcasing the perpetual calendar movement. Its 46.2 mm stainless steel case provides ample space for the sunburst blue dial to display a wealth of information. This blue dial, reminiscent of the shade used in Le Petit Prince editions, features crisp white numerals around the outer edge. The sub-dials indicate the month, day of the week, date, and power reserve, while a full year display is positioned between seven and eight o’clock. Positioned at 12 o’clock, the moon phase is flanked by two plane icons, a nod to IWC's heritage of making watches for aviators. Despite its numerous complications, the IW5038-01 maintains a remarkably legible dial, balancing function and readability. Sotheby's is proud to offer this lot in the GOAT Collection complete with its full suite of accessories.
