Frans van Ermengem, born in 1893 near Ghent, was brother of the writer, poet and art critic Franz Hellens, four times nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature and a proponent of the ‘magic realism’ movement in Belgium.

The young painter needed to find a way of standing out from his bourgeois surroundings, and after studying art in Ghent he left for Paris. There he frequented the Atelier Julian and the Académie Ranson, where Félix Vallotton taught. Although he mainly concentrated on painting, his versatility could not be suppressed: he was also engaged in graphic art and illustration as well as being a writer, poet, raconteur, art critic and journalist.

The 1920s were his most fruitful period. The artist tackled mythological, biblical and allegorical themes through the medium of voluptuous nude women in a realist style. It was the lyricism of these themes that gave his works their allure. Their bold, unsettling colour, so different from his contemporaries, endowed his paintings with a strange power, making Van Ermengem a maverick in modern Belgian art.

Frans van Ermengem, né en 1893 dans les environs de Gand, est le frère de l’écrivain, poète et critique d’art Franz Hellens, quatre fois présélectionné pour le Prix Nobel de littérature, et représentant du courant du « réalisme magique » en Belgique.

Dans un environnement bourgeois, le jeune peintre doit se distinguer et, après des études d’art à Gand, il quitte pour Paris. Il y fréquente l’Atelier Julian et l’Académie Ranson, où enseigne Félix Vallotton. S’il se consacre à la peinture principalement, sa polyvalence lui joue des tours, vu qu’il s’adonne à l’art graphique et l’illustration tout en étant également écrivain, poète, conteur, critique d’art et journaliste.

Les années 1920 seront pour lui les plus fructueuses. L’artiste aborde des thèmes mythologiques, bibliques et allégoriques à travers des figures de femmes nues et voluptueuses dans un style réaliste. C’est le lyrisme de ces thèmes qui lui donne son charme et, avec une coloration déstabilisante, audacieuse et différente de ses contemporains, il donne à ses peintures un étrange pouvoir. C’est ce qui fait de Van Ermengem un ovni dans l’art moderne belge.
