[Apollo 17]
View of Command and Service Module from Lunar Module "Challenger"
Large color photograph, 16 x 20 inches, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Lunar Module Pilot HARRISON SCHMITT: "View of CSM from / "Challenger" during / Rendezvous and Docking / procedure. / Harrison H. Schmitt / Apollo 17 LMP / 12/14/72"
Though an Apollo 18 had initially been planned, the decision to scrap the project meant the ascent of Apollo 17’s LM “Challenger” also marked the end of all human visits to the moon to date. The pictured view came during redocking; while entering lunar orbit took just over seven minutes after liftoff from the Moon’s surface, redocking took nearly two hours of careful coordination and maneuvering.
