Description
[Apollo 17]
Commander Gene Cernan on the Lunar Roving Vehicle
Large color photograph, 20 x 16 inches, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Commander GENE CERNAN: "Commander on LRV- / Taurus-Littrow / Dec 7-19, 1972 / Gene Cernan / Apollo XVII"
The entirely battery-powered Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), sometimes playfully called the Moon Buggy, was only ever used three times, on Apollo 15, 16, and 17. While low gravity made it difficult to reach high speeds across the uneven terrain, the Apollo 17 astronauts reached a top speed of 11.2 miles per hour. Like the two LRVs before it, Apollo 17’s LRV was left behind on the Moon after use.
