This painting can be dated to Carlo Francesco Nuvolone's youth, when the artist's work still reflected the influence of Giovanni Battista Crespi, called il Cerano (1575–1632), and Giulio Cesare Procaccini (1574–1625). Both painters were described as models for Nuvolone during his formative years by eighteenth-century historian Pellegrino Orlandi.1

We are grateful to Professor Francesco Frangi for endorsing the attribution to Nuvolone on the basis of digital images. He dates the painting to around 1630.
