Corpus Christi
polychromed limewood, with a modern wall mount
83 by 58cm., 32¾ by 22¾in.
Dr. Wilhelm Clemens (1847-1934), Munich
Marked by a broad ribcage and slender waist, with tense, turned-in legs and crossed feet, this Crucified Christ displays an anatomy and pose that are analogous to Corpora by the influential Bavarian Late Gothic sculptor, Hans Leinberger. Compare, for example, Leinberger's Crucifix formerly in the Church of St Castulus in Moosburg (Bildindex Foto Marburg, no. 61.776 https://www.bildindex.de/document/obj20684905), as well as the Christ figure in his Crucifixion relief of circa 1516 in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, Munich (inv. no. R 171). The tightly knotted perizonium with billowing drapery is characteristic of Corpora by sculptors from Leinberger's circle and the so-called Danube School.
