Cameo with Omphale in the guise of Hercules

the brooch mount stamped: 15CT

chalcedony, within a brooch mount

37mm., 1 1/2 in overall

This beautifully engraved and impressive cameo compares closely with the work of Luigi Michelini, a Roman gem engraver who trained under Giuseppe Girometti (1780-1951). Later basing himself in Paris, he exhibited several cameos at the Paris Salon of 1855. The quality of carving of the present gem and the type of stone compare closely with a pair of cameos mounted as earrings and indistinctly signed 'Michelini' which were sold at Sotheby's New York on 11 December 2018, lot 23.
