Portrait of a Young Girl

bears inscription on verso of unlined canvas: J.B. Greuze

oil on canvas

canvas: 15 ⅞ by 12 ⅝ in.; 40.3 by 32.1 cm.

framed: 20 ¼ by 17 ½ in.; 51.4 by 44.5 cm.

One of the few successful female artists of her day, Jeanne-Philiberte Ledoux trained in the studio of Jean-Baptiste Greuze and exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1793 and 1819. Ledoux devoted her career to painting charming head studies of young girls, drawing inspiration from the examples popularized by her teacher. A testament to her exceptional talent, Ledoux’s paintings have often been misattributed to the better-known Greuze, perhaps in part due to the fact that she rarely signed her works. This intimate portrait is particularly reminiscent of her Portrait of a Child in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow.1
