The Explorer II was introduced to support scientists and cave adventurers when they work underground without the differentiation of day and night. Thus, it highlights its presence with the big orange luminous hand which serves as the 24 hour indication. The present example can be identified with a Mark 2 "Frog foot" dial, characterized by the shape of the crown, as well as the text of perpetual's "L" lining up with Rolex's "X".
