In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary became the first man to summit Mount Everest, with an Oyster Perpetual on his wrist. This feat would inspire the Rolex Explorer, a watch dedicated to the adventurous spirit. The 1016 enjoyed an extensive production history from 1960 to 1989, which introduced the "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" text on the dial. It is the reference that collectors talks about when discussing the Explorer collection. The present example is very well preserved and a fine example of a crisp 1016 Explorer.
