In 2000, Rolex introduced the Daytona ref. 116523 as part of their new-generation Daytona collection, featuring the advanced in-house Caliber 4130 automatic movement. Prior to this release, Daytona watches utilized the modified Zenith El Primero automatic movement known as caliber 4030.

The design of the ref. 116523 bears resemblance to the iconic Vintage Paul Newman "Panda" dial, with a silvered dial and red accents on the subsidiary dials. This combination gives the watch a contemporary and sporty aesthetic, setting it apart from other Daytona models available in the market today.
