The 1680X generation of the Submariner was introduced in 1978. The 5 digit reference marked several important upgrades, including the calibre 3035 instead of the previous 1570 that did not have the quickset date function and ran at a lower frequency. It also inaugurated the sapphire crystal instead of the plexiglass for an increased scratch resistance as well as the uni-directional bezel for a safer use for divers.
Thanks to these improvements, the watch had its water-resistance increased from 200 to 300 meters as proudly indicated at 6 o'clock on the dial.
While the very vast majority of the 1680X were cased in stainless steel, a few were crafted in sold 18ct gold, such as the present lot. That precious version of the celebrated Submariner was available either in the newly introduced blue livery, such as the present lot, or the standard black dial and matching bezel.
That combination of the blue dial and bezel with the deep yellow colour of the gold case and bracelet make this watch just irresistible and perfectly embodying the nautical world with a luxurious touch.
This specimen is a perfect opportunity for a collector looking to add a rare version of the Submariner and combining the charm of the vintage with the reliability of a modern piece.
It is further accompanied by its guarantee and presentation case, making it particularly attractive.
