Here Chanel uses a French ombré textile with pattern sourced from the Japanese kimono to create a minimalist dress but with intricate detailing - a combination of technique synonymous with the couturier. Chanel examples using identical fabric in varying color-ways are held in the collections of: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 1984.30, Kyoto Costume Institute, accession number AC9182 94-45, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art, accession number 2006.4. The example in the IMA is also un-labelled.
