of oval form, each centred with a sugarloaf sapphire on one side and a diamond on the other, the gold engraved with hatching in quarters, struck to the reverse of each with maker’s mark in Cyrillic, with scratched inventory number 40451 on the reverse of each piece, as well as another obliterated scratched number

Vassili Finnikov was head workmaster in the workshop of C.E. Bolin, one of the top court jewellers at the time. His daughter, Tatiana, married Michael Perkhin in 1884, whom she possibly met whilst he was an apprentice in her father's workshop.
