Description
of amphora form, affixed at the shoulder with two gilt griffin-form handles, painted, with a rectangular panel showing the bronze equestrian statue of Frederick the Great by Christian Daniel Rauch, seen before the Prussian Palace on the Unter den Linden, Berlin, reserved on a blue-ground, the gilt-neck with a tooled band of acorn leaves, sceptre mark above eagle within roundel in underglaze-blue, incised numeral 4

The vase form is discussed by Dietmar Jürgen Ponert, Berlin Museum, Kunstgewerbe I Keramik, Berlin 1985, p. 135, cat. no. 125.
Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III commissioned the monument from sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch in 1839. It was cast beginning in 1845 by Karl Ludwig Friebel, whom Rauch brought from Lauchhammer for the purpose; changes to the figures on the base extended work to six years and the monument was unveiled at Unter den Linden on 31 May 1851. The monument shows the king surrounded by his advisors and generals, 74 people altogether, 21 of them life size, among whom four generals on horseback: Ferdinand Von Braunschweig Wolfenbüttel, Friedrich Heinrich Ludwig von Preussen, Friedrich Wilhelm von Seydlitz and Hans Joachim von Zieten.
The equestrian statue features in three of Eduard Gaertner's views of the Unter den Linden. It is likely the present vase was painted shortly after the statue's unveiling.
