Description

SALLUSTIUS CRISPUS, GAIUS. Opera Sallustiana [edited by Josse Bade]. (Lyon: Jean de Jonvelle [for Simon Vincent], 4 April 1517)


An unusual binding, notable for its signed roll toll providing the name of the bookseller, Claude Chevallon (1479-1537), active in Paris from about 1506. The stamp shows a saddled horse (cheval) between the words "Claude" and "Lon".

Folio (250 x 175mm). Black letter, 70 lines plus headline. collation: a6 a-r8 s4: 146 leaves. Title printed in red and black within inhabited woodcut border, woodcut illustrations in the text, woodcut initials, printer’s device of Simon Vincent at end.


binding: French calf over flexible pasteboards (255 x 182 mm), border roll of lozenges containing roses and the rebus of "CLAUDE [image of Cheval] LON", from the shop of Claude Chevallon, stubs from two pairs of ties, plain edges. (Binding somewhat rubbed, ends of spine chipped and cracked, some repairs to extremities.)
