An uncommon Polish binding on Hegendorf’s commentaries on parts of the New Testament. As Hegendorf (1500-1540) moved to Poznań to teach classical literature, it has been suggested that this book could have been his own copy, bound for him in Poznań. He is referred to as “a travelling salesman of humanism and reform” in Contemporaries of Erasmus (p.172).
The central panel stamp of a horned Moses receiving the tablets from God within an arched surround is otherwise unrecorded.
8vo (156 x 103 mm). Italic and roman type, 25 lines plus headline. collation: π-2π8 a-z A-H8 I4: 268 leaves. Woodcut initials. (Large tear in π7.)
binding: Contemporary Polish (Wrocław?) stamped calf over wooden boards (165 x 115 mm), upper cover with central silver panel stamp of Moses receiving the tablets from God, dated 1526 with the initials HR, title lettered on upper cover IN MARCUM|CHRIS HE|MD XXX, leafy outer border and small flower stamps, lower cover with quatrefoil border and small flower and bud stamps, same quatrefoil stamp and paper label on spine, speckled edges, two clasps, some deckle edges. In modern brown buckram drop-backed folding box. (Binding somewhat rubbed, lower cover wormed, upper joint split at head, foot of spine frayed.)
