Description

GREGORY IX. Epistolae decretales summorum Pontificum, a Gregorio Nono Pontifice Maximo collectae. Antwerp: Jacques du Puis (Christophe Plantin), 1570 (17 September 1569)

Paulus Welser came from a prominent mercantile family in Augsburg, as influential as the Fuggers, and similarly significant as book collectors. Paulus’s library had more than 1,150 volumes, though his brothers Anton and Marcus owned libraries that were even more substantial. The family firm collapsed after the death of Marcus in 1614 and Paulus and his brother ended up in a debtor’s prison. Marcus’s library was bequeathed to the Stadtbibliothek in Augsburg, and the other libraries were dispersed, some books, as here, going to local religious institutions.

The same centrepiece can be seen in Schunke, Die Einbände der Palatina in der Vatikanischen Bibliothek (Vatican, 1962), plate XXXVIII, attributed to the “Sorbonne-Meister”.

8vo (164 x 105 mm). Roman and italic type, 45 lines plus headline. collation: *-**8 A-Z8 a-z8 Aa-Ll8: 472 leaves. Woodcut initials. (Occasional light foxing.)

binding: Contemporary French gilt-stamped calf (172 x 118 mm), plausibly by a Sorbonne binder, gilt azured centre- and corner-pieces on a ground of small gilt stars, within a double gilt fillet frame, with the owner’s name PAVLVS on upper cover and WELSER on lower cover, spine with small gilt flower bud tool in each compartment and lettered in the second compartment, gilt edges. (Spine and corners repaired.)
