CELTIS, KONRAD. Conrad Celtis Protucii, primi in Germania poete coronati, libri Odarum quatuor, cum Epodo, et saeculari carmine, diligenter et accurate impraessi, et hoc primum typo in studiosorum emolumentum editi. (Strassburg: Matthias Schürer for Leonhard and Lukas Alantsee, May 1513)
Unique copy printed on vellum, in a fine mid-sixteenth-century German binding. This is the first edition of the Odes and Epodes of Celtis (1459-1508), imperial poet laureate and renowned humanist scholar. The woodcut of Celtis in his study is a close copy of the woodcut by Hans von Kulmbach used in the 1502 edition of Celtis’s love poetry, and it was likely designed by Celtis himself.
The central medallion stamp of David is very similar to one used by Hans Pfister of Nuremberg (EBDB w003206, active 1560-1600), and the outer frame of the central panel stamp appears on another binding dated 1564 (EBDB p000640).
4to (197 x 136 mm), printed on vellum. Roman type, 32 lines plus headline. collation: a8 b6 A-M8.4 N-O8: 102 leaves. Title within woodcut border by Urs Graf, full-page woodcut of Celtis in his study surrounded by Classical gods by Hans Baldung, woodcut of his tomb on penultimate verso. (Leaves A8-B2 and D3-E1 with outer margins excised, occasional light soiling.)
binding: Later sixteenth-century German (Nuremberg?) binding of gilt-stamped calf over wooden boards (211 x 146 mm), central roundel stamp of King David kneeling with text “Miserere mei deus beatus civi nomin” printed back to front, within a panel stamp of triangular leafy stamps above and below roundel with corner stamps of a dolphin, outer roll-tooled border of leafy tendrils and small heads, lower cover with initials MML and date 1567, spine with blind-tooling in each compartment and the number 126 written in white paint at foot, plain edges, remains of two clasps. (Binding somewhat worn with a few wormholes, gilding mostly rubbed away, ends of spine frayed, lower corners chipped.)
