Property from a Belgian Private Collection
A monumental scroll painting depicting Chakrapurusha
Western India, 19th century
gouache on cloth, depicting the complete diagram of the subtle body with celestial upper chakras and nadis, stemming from the cosmic ocean below, with the multi-headed serpent Ananta supporting a reclining Vishnu, with Brahma above and a column of chakras, mandalas and mythical animals, and the Thousand-petalled Flower at the apex: a second depiction of the cosmic ocean in a panel above with Ananta supporting Chakrapurusha: and the topmost panel depicting the abstract subtle body with palaces at the apex: and panels of text running the length of the scroll to the right
