The thangka illustrates the exegetical tantra, chapters one and two, of the Blue Beryl treatise by Sangye Gyamtso (1653-1705) concerning human embryology, and depicts procreation from conception to birth and maternity care, with Bhaishajyaguru presiding upper left, cf. Parfionovitch et al., eds., Tibetan Medical Paintings, London, 1992, Vol. I, pp. 25-26.
