This figure depicts the bodhisattva Maitreya with right hand raised in abhaya mudra and holding a kalasha in his left, dressed in a voluminous robe worn off the right shoulder, adorned with necklaces and earrings, with curling hair tresses tied in a double-looped chignon, a halo behind with a countersunk radiate jewel motif, and seated on an acanthus leaf pedestal with rectangular throne back. Compare a seated Maitreya in the British Museum, in W. Zwalf, A Catalogue of the Gandhara Sculpture in the British Museum, London, 1996, Vol. II, fig. 66, and compare the undulating foliate pedestal design of a bodhisattva Padmapani, ibid, fig. 115.
