Appearing in the guise of an Indian mahasiddha, wearing bone jewellery and a copper-inlaid meditation strap (Tib. gom tag) across his chest, his face with moustache and goatee, wide eyes inlaid with silver, and lips with copper, long hair plaited in a high chignon and tied with bone ornaments, holding his customary ritual implements of vajra and kapala, and seated on a lotus pedestal covered with a flayed tiger-skin.

The Tibetan yogi Tsang Nyon Heruka (1452-1507) is renowned for his eccentric appearance, and for his compilation of Milarepa’s One Hundred Thousand Songs. Compare the floral patterned copper-inlaid meditation band across the chest with a fifteenth or sixteenth century inlaid bronze depicting a Tibetan hierarch, see David Weldon and Casey Singer, The Sculptural Heritage of Tibet: Buddhist Art in the Nyingjei Lam Collection, London, 1999, pl. 47.
