The Property of a Gentleman

A kawari kabuto [eccentrically shaped helmet] and hanbo [half mask]

Edo period, early 17th century


the lacquered iron bowl applied in dried lacquer to the apex, the black lacquer peak with furrowed brow, the black lacquered five-tiered neck guard with spaced lacing in blue braid, the black lacquered hanbo [half mask] of typical form with yadome [standing flanges] to the cheeks, red lacquer interior, four-tiered black lacquer throat protector with matching braid


The bowl to peak: 24 cm., 9½ in.


Accompanied by a certificate of registration as Tokubetsu Kicho Shiryo [Especially Important Material], no.2197 issued by the Nihon Katchu Bugu Kenkyu Hozon Kai [Society for the Preservation of Japanese Armour], dated Reiwa 6 (2024).
