engraved with Royal Arms repeated on the opposite side in the garter between initials GR, the cover also engraved with the crowned garter flanked by initials GR, the lower body and cover applied with strapwork in alternating designs, marked on base, the cover rim with maker's mark and lion passant, the base with scratch weight 98.02 and later scratch weight 126=2, the cover rim with scratch weight 29.4

Thomas Farren became Free of the Goldsmiths' Company in 1707, and was Subordinate Goldsmith to the King from 1723 to 1742. As such, he would have supplied the Jewel House and the Crown. George II regularly gave cups and covers as christening gifts to children for whom he was a godparent, such as one of 1731 by Edward Feline, given to Emily, daughter of the Duke of Richmond (Gilbert Collection, Victoria & Albert Museum), one of 1747 by John Hugh LeSage, given to George, Baron Brooke, son of the Earl of Warwick (Sotheby's New York, 5 June 1997 lot 125), see lot 54, and one of c. 1757 given to George, 2nd son of Marquess Townsend (Sotheby's London, 17 October 2018, lot 19)
