Joseph Ferdinand Doeve was born in 1907 in Bandung, Indonesia. He began to draw when he was very young and received his first commission at the age of sixteen, from the cinema in his natal town. At twenty, decided to study at the agricultural college in Wageningen, in Holland, where he stayed for the rest of his life. Although he never had any artistic training, he ended up as a painter, draftsman, engraver and illustrator – and a designer of banknotes and theatre sets.

It was mainly from 1940 that Doeve turned to painting, encouraged by his contemporaries, notably Raoul Hynckes. He began to receive both public and private commissions for the production of monumental works.

The Mount Bromo, Java however, is one of the artist’s personal works, a probable reminiscence of the magnificent and awe-inspiring views he was able to observe throughout his childhood.

An impression of melancholy emanates from this composition in tones of blue, an almost dreamlike vision of wild nature. The fine brushstroke betrays the hand of a draftsman. As is often the case, he has approached the subject from a bird’s eye view and in a large format, deploying a palette of blues and yellows and plunging the viewer into the heart of the still smoking volcanoes.

Joseph Ferdinand Doeve naît en 1907 à Bandung, en Indonésie. Il commence à dessiner très jeune, et reçoit à 16 ans sa première commande, du cinéma de sa ville natale. Dès l’âge de 20 ans, Doeve choisit de partir étudier au lycée agricole de Wageningen, en Hollande, où il s’installe jusqu’à la fin de sa vie. Sans même avoir suivi une formation artistique, il devient finalement peintre, dessinateur, graveur et illustrateur, concevant notamment des billets de banque ou encore des décors de théâtre.

C’est principalement à partir de 1940 que Doeve s’essaie à la peinture, encouragé par ses contemporains, notamment Raoul Hynckes. Il réalise alors des œuvres monumentales, pour des commanditaires publics ou privés.

Le volcan Bromo, à Java est quant à lui une œuvre personnelle de l’artiste, réminiscence des somptueuses et grandioses vues qu’il a pu observer durant toute son enfance.

Une impression de mélancolie se dégage de cette composition bleutée, vision presque onirique d’une nature sauvage… La matière, finement travaillée, trahit une main de dessinateur. Comme souvent, il traite le sujet en plongée et dans un format important, déployant une palette de bleus et de jaunes, plongeant le spectateur au cœur des volcans encore fumants…
