Maiolica broad-rimmed bowl


tin-glazed earthenware

lustred in gold and red and painted in blue, ochre, red and white, centred by an anonymous coat of arms flanked by the crowned initials AE and an eagle, heraldic symbol of Duke Alfonso I d’Este. The rim is decorated with two symmetrical dolphins or fantastic monsters with tails morphing into cornucopiae, below the head of a winged putto. Concentric lines and stylized flowers in red lustre and a Metropolitan Museum of Art loan number painted in red ‘’ L.37.30.85’’ on the reverse
