A suite of Louis XIV silver-mounted furniture 

the silver French, circa 1670, by André Regnier and bearing the marks of Pierre Fourfault, the ebonised supports English, circa 1820


comprising a table and a pair of torchères, the table with a silver top and sides composed of numerous overlapping panels, richly chased and embossed with flowers, foliage and cornucopia, with an acanthus leaf border, the lower horizontal section of the table chased with a foliate and floral design, the sides with an ovolo and honeysuckle pattern, on reeded legs with a conjoined shaped x-stretcher on tapering feet, the torchères with dished circular tops, possibly contemporary with the silver with central roundels chased and embossed with a floral and foliate design, with acanthus borders matching that of the table top, on reeded stems, the triform bases composed of three panels with vertical leaf borders between


the table: 78.5cm. high, 106cm. wide, 66.5cm. deep; 2ft. 7in., 3ft. 5¾in., 2ft. 2¼in., the torcheres: 102cm. high, 36.5cm. diameter; 3ft. 4in., 1ft. 2½in.

Acquired by George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham (1628-1687) most probably whilst in Paris in 1670-72;
given by 2nd Duke of Buckingham to his former mistress, Anna Maria Talbot, Countess of Shrewsbury (1642-1702) at Avington Park Hampshire, following her marriage to George Brydges in 1677;
by descent to their son, George William Brydges (1678-1751) who died without heir and whose estates passed to his cousin;
Henry Brydges, 2nd Duke of Chandos (1708-1771);
by descent to Lady Anne Brydges (1779-1836), the only surviving child of James Brydges, 3rd Duke of Chandos, who in 1796 married Richard Temple-Nugent-Grenville, 1st Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1776-1839);
by descent to Richard Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, (1797-1861) until sold in The Stowe House sale, Messrs. Christie and Manson, 15 August 1848 and the following forty days, the torcheres, 2nd day of sale, lot 261, the table, 3rd day of sale, lot 294.
acquired at the above sale by Sarah Sophia Child Villiers, the Countess of Jersey (1785-1867);
thence by descent to the current owner.
