Very Fine Yellow-Painted Sack-Back Knuckled Windsor Armchair

Circa 1780
Retains a nineteenth century yellow paint over red over its original green paint.

"This chair is a fine example of that wonderful mellow surface patina that one finds on an absolutely untouched chair. An early nineteenth century straw-colored coat of paint covers the original eighteenth century green. The straw color is ornamental, with green striping on the turnings, seat and arm rail. The skin of this chair, as I like to refer to it, with all its imperfections -the wear, the flaking, and the crazing -only add the distinction of time to its grace and beauty." - Charles Santore, 1981
