François-Gabriel Lépaulle’s artistic output was prolific during his lifetime, becoming a regular contributor to the Paris Salon from 1824. He travelled extensively during his lifetime visiting Spain, Italy, North Africa and Turkey for inspiration, however he was perhaps most known for his portraits. The present work, a rare subject for the artist, depicts a stallion and his groom in an Egyptian landscape - the Pyramids visible in the distance. The careful attention to detail towards the groom, particularly his clothing and weapons, highlights Lépaulle’s accomplishments as a portraitist. Tucked into his waist is an ivory-hilted Yataghan, whilst in his left hand he holds an Ottoman Kilij. The presence of these fine items asserts his status as important and powerful figure.
