Lot Details

Description

Embroidered with a running floral border interspersed with images of pomegranates and inscribed: “Elevated [placed] on the Torah scroll, on the holy Sabbath of their wedding, in the year 5517 [1757]. May God be gracious to them, just as Joseph the Righteous and Queen Esther found favor [in the eyes of God], and may they merit to see the [re]building of the Temple.” The inclusion of the names of these two biblical figures in the inscription likely indicates that the names of the bride and groom in whose honor this binder was dedicated were Joseph and Esther.

Physical Description

Linen embroidered with red silk thread and edged with lace on the upper border (7 1/4 x 89 1/2 in.; 184 x 2275 mm). Small losses of threads and few scattered light stains.
