inscriptions: Parts of Surat al-Baqarat (II), vv.255-256.

These Qur'anic verses were popular in Muslim India and were often found on tombs. A case such as this would have held several rolled-up pages of the Surat al-Baqarat, the verses encapsulating the principal themes of the revelation, or perhaps an entire miniature scroll Qur'an (Welch A. Calligraphy in the Arts of the Muslim World, New York 1979, p.193).
