Austrian School, 18th Century | Ecole autrichienne du XVIIIe siècle

These two portraits depict respectively Albert Casimir of Saxony-Teschen, future archduke and governor-general of the Netherlands and his wife, the Habsburg Archduchess Maria Christina of Austria. The two paintings ably reproduce portraits in the Albertina in Vienna. The portrait of the Archduchess was painted in 1778 by Alexandre Roslin and the present work shows the image reversed. The portrait of the future archduke (inv. KHM.GG.8871) has been assigned to Charles Leclerc, although the attribution is not sufficiently convincing. Our painting reproduces it without any variations.  

These fine formal paintings, executed with care and refinement, portray one of the most powerful couples in late eighteenth century Europe in a spectacular and elegant manner. Maria Christina of Austria, Marie-Antoinette’s elder sister, was also Princess of Bohemia and Hungary and Duchess of Saxony. Her husband, the Duke of Teschen, had also been imperial marshal from 1765 to 1780, governor of the kingdom of Hungary from 1781 to 1790 and governor-general of the Austrian Netherlands. He founded the Albertina, which holds his collection of graphic art, one of the most important in the world.

Ces deux portraits représentent respectivement Albert Casimir de Saxe-Teschen, futur archiduc et gouverneur général des Pays-Bas et son épouse, l’archiduchesse Marie-Christine de Habsbourg. Ces deux tableaux reprennent habilement les portraits conservés à l’Albertina à Vienne. Le portrait de l’Archiduchesse a été peint en 1778 par Alexandre Roslin (inv. DL48) et notre tableau le reprend en contrepartie. Le portrait du futur archiduc (inv. KHM.GG.8871) a été quant à lui attribué à Charles Leclerc sans que l’attribution soit suffisamment convaincante. Notre tableau le reprend sans variante. 

Tableaux d’apparat réalisés avec soin et finesse, ces beaux portraits représentent de manière spectaculaire et élégante un des couples les plus puissants d’Europe au tournant du XVIII^e siècle. En effet, l’archiduchesse d'Autriche, grande sœur de Marie-Antoinette, a été également princesse de Bohême et de Hongrie et duchesse de Saxe. Son mari, le duc de Teschen, a également été maréchal impérial de 1765 à 1780, gouverneur du Royaume de Hongrie de 1781 à 1790 et gouverneur général des Pays-Bas autrichiens. Il est aussi le fondateur de l'Albertina où est conservée sa collection d’art graphique, l’une des plus importantes au monde.
