This impressive panel, in fine condition, has recently been reattributed to the Master of Alforja, a painter from the Tarragona region. It was previously thought to be the work of Paolo da San Leocadio, an Italian artist living in Valencia. The sculptural character of the figures, the densely applied paint and the intense colours do indeed recall this artist, who moved to the Iberian peninsula in the early 1470s after training in Ferrara.

Antonio Gómez Arribas (op. cit.) has recently identified the Master of Alforja as the painter Joan Montoliu, to whom Gómez also attributes works usually assigned to the Master of Pere de Cardona. This hypothesis is appealing, but seems not to have reached a consensus.

Cet impressionnant panneau, en bel état de conservation, a récemment été réattribué au Maestro de Alforja, un peintre de la région de Tarragone. Il était auparavant considéré comme une œuvre de l’artiste italien installé à Valence Paolo da San Leocadio. Le caractère sculptural des figures, la densité de la matière picturale, le coloris soutenu rappellent en effet cet artiste, venu s’installer dans la péninsule ibérique au début des années 1470, après s’être formé à Ferrare.

Le Maestro de Alforja a lui-même été récemment identifié par Antonio Gómez Arribas (op. cit.), au peintre Joan Montoliu, nom sous lequel Gómez regroupe également les œuvres que l’on donne également en général au Maestro de Pere de Cardona. Cette hypothèse, séduisante, ne semble toutefois pas faire consensus.
