Conrad Wise Chapman

Son of an artist, Conrad Chapman was born in Washington DC but grew up in Europe. He returned to the country of his birth to fight on the side of the Confederates in the American Civil War. During this time, he made sketches from which he produced paintings when he briefly returned to Rome to be at his ailing mother’s bedside. When the Civil War was over, he travelled to Mexico with other former Confederates and painted several views of the country.

The present painting is one of the finest examples of these views. The technical precision of the battle-hardened painter enabled him to bring charm and poetry to this landscape while preserving its topographical aspect.

Fils d’un artiste, Conrad Chapman est né aux Etats-Unis à Washington mais a grandi en Europe. Il retourne dans son pays natal pour combattre pendant la guerre de Sécession aux côtés des confédérés où il réalise des croquis à partir desquels il exécute des tableaux lors de son bref retour à Rome pour se rendre au chevet de sa mère malade. Il part avec d’autres anciens confédérés au Mexique à la fin de la guerre de Sécession, c’est à cette période qu’il réalise qu’il réalise plusieurs vues de Mexico.

Notre tableau est un des plus beaux exemples de ces vues. La technique précise de ce peintre aguerri lui permet de donner à ce paysage du charme et de la poésie tout en conservant une dimension topographique.
