A Spanish small-sword, dated 1848

with tapering blade formed in two stages the upper of flattened-hexagonal section, the lower of rectangular section and etched with foliage, inscribed ‘Arta Fca To’ and ‘Ano de 1848’, gilt-brass hilt comprising double shell-guard chased with a wavey framework enclosing pierced expanded flowerheads, short globular quillon, quillon block, pas d’ âne, knuckle-guard, globular pommel and grip, the principal elements all en suite with the shell-guard
