Leading from the east side of Amsterdam southwards towards Utrecht, the river Vecht was the location of the country residences of many of Amsterdam's wealthy merchant families (see also lots 334 and 343). The picturesque small town of Weesp lies towards the Amsterdam end of the Vecht. It was regularly depicted by artists, from the 17th century on; a particularly notable drawing of Weesp is the splendid, large sheet by Simon de Vlieger, in the Abrams Collection.¹1. Harvard University Art Museums, The Maida and George Abrams Collection, inv. no. 2008.250 (https://harvardartmuseums.org/collections/object/211847?position=7)
