Tsujimura Kai (b. 1976)

Faceted stoneware flower vase

the rectangular stoneware body of slab potting, natural ash glaze

53 cm., 20⅞ in. high

Koichi Yanagi, New York

The second son of Tsujimura Shiro, Tsujimurai Kai was born in 1976. He learned the process of mixing clay with his father, but later built his own kiln, house and studio in 2000. Much of his work makes use of wood-burning firing, which can result in unanticipated and diverse outcomes. Although indebted to traditional forms of medieval pottery and working primarily in the Shigaraki and Bizen modes, Kai’s work is infused with a contemporary sensibility with spontaneity central to his practice.
