white unglazed porcelain, hollow interior, incised to the base Taizo and with impressed mark, accompanied with a fitted wood storage box (tomobako) inscribed Hakuji daizara [white porcelain platter], signed in black ink in Japanese and in Roman script Taizo, with artist's two read seals, signed and dated in pencil Kuroda 06 (2006)


45.5 cm., 17½ in. diam.; 16.1 cm., 6⅜ in. high (the daizara)

22 x 50.5 x 50.5 cm., 8⅝ x 19⅞ x 19⅞ in. (the fitted wood storage box)

Although at first reminiscent of a deep bowl, this daizara [lit. large plate] is actually a raised platter with a flat top. Minimalist in form and execution, the large body of the unglazed white porcelain is slightly matt. Through its curved and flat surfaces, the platter becomes a conduit for a harmonic interplay of light and shadow. Much sought after domestically, and highly regarded internationally, Kuroda’s works are esteemed by the likes of fashion designer Miyake Issey, as well as the architect Ando Tadao.
