Drawings of specific locations are extremely rare in the work of Cornelis Saftleven, but it has been suggested that the ruins seen here may be those of the Huis te Riviere (also known as Huis Mathenesse), at Schiedam - the oldest known rectangular castle in Holland, built in 1262, the remains of which can still be seen today.
In its understated representation of a classic Dutch winter scene, this atmospheric drawing recalls those of the pioneering landscape masters of somewhat earlier in the 17th century, such as Esaias van de Velde.
