sale, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 2 November 1987, lot 90,
where purchased by A.M. ('Ton') van den Broek (1932-1995), Haarlem (bears his mark, verso, not in Lugt)
Teekeningen van Oude Meesters...de Verzameling van Mr. Chr. P. van Eeghen, exh. cat., Amsterdam, Museum Fodor, 1935, p. 29, under no. 101;
C. van Hasselt, Dessins de Paysagistes Hollandais du XVIIe Siècle, exh. cat., Brussels/Rotterdam/Paris/Berne, 1968-9, vol.I, p.168, under no.165 (incorrectly as a copy (French edition) or second version (Dutch edition) of the Van Eeghen drawing).
Comparable views of towns in the Netherlands by Van de Vinne, some also dated 1683, are at Cambridge, Besançon, Leiden, Haarlem, Amsterdam and Paris.  An undated view of Gouda seen from a little further west was in the Van Eeghen collection, Amsterdam (see Literature).  Both drawings are very similar in medium, measurements and style.

None of the drawings in this very consistent group is signed, but as Carlos van Hasselt noted (see Literature), their attribution is confirmed by the survival, in the Haarlem Municipal Archives, of two diaries and a sketchbook containing notes and drawings from the artist's travels in Germany, Switzerland and France.
